Sorrow and Joy

  • Trinity Lutheran Church 527 Washington Street Reading, PA, 19601 United States (map)

Step into a powerful musical tradition with a concert of Ukrainian art songs. These aren't just beautiful melodies; they are a profound expression of Ukrainian identity and national pride. This program is a testament to the resilience of a culture that has endured centuries of oppression, with composers often defying bans on the Ukrainian language to create their art.

Through the music of pioneers like Mykola Lysenko and his students, we witness how the art song became a cultural frontline, refuting propaganda and preserving the soul of a nation through perseverance and resistance. The program celebrates these composers and their unwavering dedication to their heritage, brought to life by a talented trio of performers. Andrew Skitko, a member of the Ukrainian Art Song Project, lends his powerful voice to this repertoire, while Ukrainian-born pianist Alina Rabchuk brings her collaborative artistry to the stage. They are joined by violinist and composer Ksenia Stetsenko-Skitko, who not only performs but also carries a personal connection to this history as the great-granddaughter of celebrated composer Kyrylo Stetsenko. Together, they offer a captivating journey through themes of hope, despair, resilience, and love—all told through the powerful and unyielding language of song.
